Cindy's Web Evaluation: On June 9th 1998, Peter Piot wrote an article about his research with AIDS at [[http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/280/5371/1844.%3C/span%3E%3Cspan|http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/280/5371/1844.<span]] style="COLOR: #451111"> ScienceMag.org is a website for scientists who write articles about their research and news. The article by Peter Piot is personal, but it is on an educational website of science essays. The article presents many good facts, but gives a little opinion at the end since it’s a personal essay. It presents both sides of the argument, but Piot is biased toward one--that something should be done about finding a cure for AIDS and how laws should be changed to suit better research. The website was very effective and I would definitely recommend it to another student researching AIDS because most of it is composed of useful facts on AIDS. Also, the ending shows one of the sides on controversy surrounding the issue of AIDS. I accessed the website on May 22, 2008.

Reshma's Web Evaluation: The website that I am evaluating is www.aidsaction.org, a website representing a non-profit organization to help AIDS victims by trying to convince US government officials to pass laws that help victims. The organization also increases awarness of AIDS and the importance of creaing a vaccine for the HIV virus. This website was very official, and contained powerpoints that had information concerning all the laws about AIDS in the US in the past few years. This also has specific information pertaining to individual states, so I used it to find differences between federal laws and state laws when it comes to AIDS. Because the powerpoints contian legal documents and federal laws, this website was very professional and stated many facts. However, because the organization is trying to raise money, there are some parts of the website that try to convince the viewer to donate and help out victims. Because AIDS is a disease that is affecting people, I think that it is okay that the author of the website is persuading viewers to donate. I researched a little on the background of the organization and found that the money donated actually did reach the victims, and that this organization has caused some laws to be passed. The author is not listed on the webpage, but it is written by the members of the AIDS Action Organization. The webpage was created in 1986, and was last updated April 14, 2008 by its executive director. I accessed this page on May 21, 2008.

Kit's Web Evaluation:

The website I am evaluating is called IDEA, or International Debate Education Association. The URL is http://www.idebate.org/<span style="color: #000000">. This page is an organization with debates on all sorts of topics, written by professional debaters and judges. Seeing as I am the educator in my group, this site helped me pick controversial topics for the biology class to discuss. This website was established in 1999, and includes many debates by different authors. I visited this site on May 23, 2008. IDEA is an educational website, and encompasses a variety of debates on current controversial topics. The articles argue for both sides of the debate, and are not biased, though various opinions are included. This site was very helpful for me because it had not only one, but many ideas for AIDS discussion topics. It was very professional, and I appreciated the easily-navigated format. I would recommend it to another student if they needed both sides of an argument for a hot issue. Overall, being a first time user, I was very impressed with the IDEA organization.

Jill's Web Evaluation:
Website: http://www.avert.org/introtrt.htm
This website was created by AVERT, an international AIDS charity. They always update their website to have the latest information about all kinds of AIDS topics. I used this website to find the treatment of AIDS. The article was written by many different people in the organization. The website is not biased, and it is not trying to be persuasive. The article is strictly presenting facts about the treatment of AIDS. The website was very effective. It has a lot of information on different types of treatment as well as the five categories of medicine. I would recommend this website to another student because it presents the facts in an unbiased way, and it has more information in addition to the treatment.
